I stepped out of my usual format for a special radio show, first broadcast on February 3, 2017, that examined the work of three great late-romantic composers: the Russian master Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, German genius Johannes Brahms, and the visionary Austrian Anton Bruckner. All three were gripped by crises of severe proportions in the late 1870s, and this show focuses on their lives and music at that time. Quotations from these composers are also included. The music played is:

PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY
Francesca da Rimini (1876)

JOHANNES BRAHMS
Lieder und Gesänge, Op. 32, No. 9, “Wie bist du, meine Königin” (1864)
Two Rhapsodies for piano, Op. 79 (1879)

ANTON BRUCKNER
Symphony No. 4 in E flat “Romantic,” First Movement (Bewegt, nicht zu schnell), Fourth Movement (Finale: Bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell) [excerpt] (1878/80)
