This program, first broadcast on January 19, 2014, looks at two major symphonic works from 1934. One has been celebrated and the other neglected, but both offer powerful forebodings of the coming worldwide conflagration: the Fourth Symphony of Ralph Vaughan Williams and the Second Symphony of Kurt Weill. To deepen appreciation of these two great composers, other works of theirs are also included in the program:
